If you still remember, ASUS had been a pioneer of selfie smartphones through the presence of ZenFone Selfie in 2015 ago. After a year of absent in2016, this year ZenFone Selfie already comes back as part of the ZenFone 4 series.
ZenFone 4 Selfie has two variants, namely the regular and pro versions. The design is exactly the same but actually, there is a fundamental difference where the pro version has a metal body, while the regular version called metal look is, in fact, made from plastic.
During in a week of trial, this smartphone successfully makes us comfortable because the back body is not dirty easily, although rather slippery. This slippery effect comes because of the metal material of smartphone’ body, but so far, it’s fine.
Talk about the design, ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro arguably is a smartphone with feminine style. This impression comes because of attractive color choices and thin body. If we compare with some previous ASUS smartphone type, especially the Max series, we will immediately feel that ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro is really thin and light.
But even lightly, this smartphone is powerful, especially in the solid design of the frame. And on the ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro, ASUS has granted requests from its users. What are they?
Yes, the capacitive back button and recent apps on this smartphone already have a white backlight. In addition, to making more comfortable, these also give the impression that ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro is not a cheap smartphone. The home button has a contemporary design. No need to be really pressed, just touch it. Also, the sensor can directly read the fingerprint without having to turn the screen first.
Beside the backlight on the button, ASUS also includes LED notification near the front camera. Then at the bottom, we can see that ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro still has an audio jack, micro USB port, and mono speakers.
As a member of ZenFone 4 series, it is confirmed that ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro has been enhanced with ZenUI 4.0 while the current version of its Android has reached 7.1.1.
If we see at a glance, it is like no difference between ZenUI 4.0 and ZenUI 3.0. But with the increasing time of using, we finally found some new features of ZenUI 4.0 on this smartphone.
With this ZenUI 4.0 feature, we can duplicate social media without using the applications of the third party. The number and variations of the theme have greatly improved. Moreover, there are themes that supported by animation aka motion. It also provides custom wallpaper in order to meet the needs of users who are easily bored. So, it can change itself and already supports parallax or motion effects.
And one of the new features that may have missed from our attention turns out to be in the gallery which already supported by AI. There is an explore tab where the photos in the gallery will be grouped automatically, eg by face. It makes the process of looking for photos will be easier.
It is a certain thing that the inner specification brought by ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro is similar to the previous version. The used chipset is one of the most favorite chipsets in the middle class, the Snapdragon 625. Besides having a good computing ability, the power consumption is also very economical.
During using with one SIM card in a heavy usage, especially YouTube streaming for up to two hours, the SoTs that we get is never under six hours with a total duration of 17 hours. Although using the standard battery, just 3,000 mAh, it can be sure that we don’t need to bring charger when going to work or doing daily activities.
Another fun feature is the special Always-on Display in the ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro version. This feature exists because the ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro screen is made of AMOLED panels while the regular version is made from IPS panel.
Because of the use of AMOLED, the automatic screen becomes more colorful. Plus, the resolution is already Full HD. So if we set the size of the display and the smallest font though, it still has very nice views.
The highlight feature of the ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro is certainly the camera. Among the existing ZenFone 4 variants, it’s just ZenFone Selfie which has no dual-rear camera. The main camera has a little bulge with the resolution up to 16 MP, dual-LED flash, gyro-based EIS, and PDAF.
We can take a picture with pro mode with this main camera. Also, there is a manual setting focus with stated shutter speed, ie 1 / 10.000 to 32 seconds, and ISO from 25 to 3200.
When using the main camera, we feel that the shutter lag is not too fast even the light is sufficient. On the other hand, the auto-focus is quite quick. Well, for the picture result is arguably ordinary. Another condition is if the place is rather dark, the noise will easily be found. But if the place is too bright, dynamic range can’t work properly.
Moving to the front side of the smartphone, there’s a 12 MP f / 1.8 main selfie camera with Sony IMX 362 sensor, 6 layer lens, HDR, Beautify, LED flash, and Duo Pixel technology. Plus, it is equipped with one wide camera 120 degrees 5 MP. Without wasting time, we have photographed dozens or even hundreds of selfie photos to know the quality.
The level of beautifying effects or Live Beautify provided ranging from 0 to 10 and we feel that the effective level is only 1 to 6. The reason why we choose that scale is if we use higher level, instead of looking beautiful, the photo result becomes weirder and the details tend to decrease. Even if your face pimpled, beautify in level 5 is effective enough.
And when you do a selfie with a 12 MP camera, you have the option to get a sharper image. The trick is when you activate Duo Pixel then the resolution will increase to 24 MP. But consequently, the process of photographing is so much longer which takes two to three seconds.
Besides to Duo Pixel, ASUS also provides wide-angle options through a second camera with 5MP resolution. Should be noted that this wide-angle camera is only effective for doing a selfie in outdoor. If you keep forcing shooting in indoor, the result will be noise and we also find a distortion which the object slightly curved like taking pictures using GoPro.
The last thing which offered the front camera ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro is portrait mode. This mode can be used either 12 MP camera or 5 MP wide camera. We can also combine with the beautify effect to make it more fascinating. If we look the detail of the picture results, the bokeh effect is less presentable. Although not really perfect, the portrait mode is still fun to use.
Created for selfie fans, ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro offers beautiful and feminine designs. This smartphone is also equipped with the high standard of hardware. And for you, selfie enthusiast, dual-camera with wide angle and portrait options can add excitement when doing selfie.
But what is offered through the front camera for us, personally, still can’t make ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro the best. In other words, ASUS still needs to improve the ability of the front camera through one of the options which we suggest, software updates.
